Celebrating 20 Years of impact: Wallace Martin’s incredible journey with the Y
Wallace (Wal) Martin, the driving force behind the Y Ballarat’s much-loved ReCranked program celebrated 20 years with the Y Ballarat.
Wal’s two decades of service are defined by his deep commitment to empowering young people, supporting communities, and creating lasting, positive change. His journey with the Y is a true example of living our values, and during the year, his remarkable contribution was recognised at the highest level.
National recognition
Amongst Wal’s achievements, was being named Y Australia’s Staff Member of the Year in 2022 for his dedication, leadership and community spirit.
It’s a well-deserved recognition for someone whose impact has reached far beyond Ballarat.
From youth camps to ReCranked
Since joining the Y in 2007, Wal has been at the heart of countless programs that support young people to learn, grow and lead. He began his journey with Connect Camps and youth leadership programs, where his approachable and caring nature made an immediate impact.
But it’s through ReCranked, our innovative bike recycling program, that Wal’s vision, creativity and passion have truly shone.
ReCranked: Turning unwanted bikes into new opportunities
Under Wal’s leadership, ReCranked has transformed thousands of lives, and as many bikes. The program rescues unwanted bicycles, giving them new life and new purpose. Each refurbished bike offers its new owner something invaluable: a way to travel, exercise, connect and belong.
The initiative has a huge sustainability impact, keeping bikes out of landfill and giving them a second chance to serve the community. Today, the ReCranked workshop in Wendouree is a hive of activity and packed with bikes waiting to be repaired, all supported by a dedicated team of nine volunteers.
It’s more than a workshop; it’s a place of connection, a friendly, inclusive space where locals drop in, volunteers find purpose, and young people learn valuable hands-on skills.
Inspiring young people and making far reaching impact
In 2020, Wal piloted the ReCranked in Schools program teaching students how to repair and maintain bikes while sparking interest in sustainability and practical skills. The success was immediate. Today, the program has grown and is delivered to six schools each term, providing engaging hands-on sessions and a different way of learning. There is currently a waiting list of schools wishing to take part.
Through this initiative, Wal has created a powerful learning model that combines environmental responsibility, activities that re-engage young people with education and youth empowerment.
Making a difference far and wide
Wal’s generosity and drive have taken ReCranked’s impact well beyond Ballarat. In 2022, he travelled over 1,700 kilometres to flood-affected communities near Evans Head, NSW, personally delivering a truckload of refurbished bikes to families who had lost so much.
His partnerships with groups like Bikes for Humanity have extended the program’s reach overseas. ReCranked bikes help people in remote communities in countries such as Namibia, where access to transport can be life-changing.
A lasting legacy of dedication
In recognition of his extraordinary contribution, Wal was honoured with Y Ballarat and Y Ballarat Youth Services Life Membership. It’s a fitting tribute for someone who has dedicated two decades to empowering others, fostering inclusion, and building stronger, more connected communities.
Always generous with his time and knowledge, Wal is known for his warmth, humility and outstanding commitment. Whether he’s mentoring volunteers, delivering bikes to families, or chatting with families who drop by the workshop, he embodies everything the Y stands for.
Thank you, Wal, for your 20 years of service, and for inspiring so many others.
